# Garden of the Redentore: A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Venice

- [November 26, 2024](https://veniceredhouse.com/2024/11/26/)

A corner of peace and beauty opens to the public: **[Garden of the Redentore](https://www.venicegardensfoundation.org/it/hortus-redemptoris)** on Giudecca Island.
This extraordinary space, designed by architect Andrea Palladio, is a hidden treasure where history, nature, and spirituality converge.

Donated to the Capuchin monks after the plague of 1575-1577, the garden has been recently restored by the [Venice Gardens Foundation](https://www.venicegardensfoundation.org/it) following the damage caused by the 2019 high tide. Spanning over 2,000 square meters, it offers a journey through orchards, olive groves, chestnut trellises, and Mediterranean plants, evoking the ancient *Hortus Simplicium* (Garden of Simples).

Among its highlights are:

- ***The lily pond***, a symbol of tranquility.
- ***The Garden of Pittosporum***, offering breathtaking views of the lagoon at sunset.
- ***The Ancient Workshops***, meticulously restored and repurposed as spaces for art and workshops, including an olive press for oil production.

Another unmissable experience at the **Garden of the Redentore Venice** is the **Lagoon-front Café**, beautifully managed by Illycaffè. This charming café offers a menu inspired by the garden itself, with dishes made from fresh, seasonal produce harvested directly from the garden’s fertile soil. We had the pleasure of trying the **risotto with peoci** (local mussels), a dish that not only impressed with its vibrant presentation but also delighted our taste buds with its delicate flavors. In addition to its seasonal dishes, the café also offers a carefully curated selection of **local wines**, including those from the renowned **Vigne Salse Winery**. These wines, crafted in the surrounding Veneto region, perfectly complement the flavors of the food and enhance the overall sensory experience of the garden. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet lunch or a leisurely evening, the café provides a peaceful haven where you can savor the tastes of Venice in a truly unique setting.

Visitors are invited to explore its winding paths, discover its hidden corners, and immerse themselves in the tranquility that only such a serene and well-preserved environment can offer. Whether you’re seeking a quiet escape, a deeper connection to Venice’s history, or a place to indulge in authentic flavors, the **Garden of the Redentore** offers all of this and more, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the true spirit of Venice.
